Session Description:

Identity theft is clearly a real problem in today’s technology enabled world. Threats to personal and financial data continue to emerge and the news is full of incidents where data loss has resulted in millions of impacted consumers.

Over the past several years, there has been a series of data breaches involving huge numbers of credit card numbers. These events reflect some interesting opportunities for analysis leading to valuable Lessons Learned.

This presentation will:

  • Provide a brief summary of the TJX, Hannaford, and Heartland Payment data breaches

  • Consider some of the unique aspects (both good and bad) of each breakdown

  • Identify some expected "fall out" from these incidents
    Conclude with some useful, business-based Lessons Learned that benefit every organization

This session is appropriate for senior financial executives with responsibility for Retail Banking, Fraud and Security, Credit Cards, Market Research and Strategy Teams.

About Joseph R. Filer, CISSP, PMP:
Mr. Joe Filer is a recognized Information Security Professional with over 15 years of solid senior management experience in the Financial Services, Defense, Technology, Consulting, Telecommun-ications, and Healthcare industries.

As the Client Security Advocate for Harland Clarke, he provides a “client perspective” to ensure that Harland Clarke’s information security policy/procedures, security risk assessment efforts, and company security awareness/training programs result in lower risks associated with doing business with Harland Clarke. He advises and collaborates with Harland Clarke business segments to validate program effectiveness as reflected in client security requirements, service levels agreements, business associate agreements, business continuity/disaster recovery plans, and audit/regulatory compliance practices. Another key contribution focuses on providing security subject matter expertise so that Harland Clarke employs technology products or provides services that represent security solutions designed to enable customer business initiatives focused in check manufacturing and check-related services, contact center services and direct response marketing solutions.

Mr. Filer received an MS in Operations Research from the Air Force Institute of Technology and a Bachelors of Arts in Mathematics from Siena College. He holds multiple industry certifications including Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Project Manager Professional (PMP).

Mr. Filer is a member of several associations and organizations including the Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X9F, Computer Security Institute and Information Systems Security Association where he served as the President of the Alamo chapter for two years.
